Cellulose as a Nanostructured Polymer: a Short Review

نویسنده

  • Michael Ioelovich
چکیده

Cellulose has a complex, multi-level supermolecular architecture. This natural polymer is built from superfine fibrils having diameters in the nano scale, and each such nanofibril contains ordered nanocrystallites and low-ordered nano-domains. In this review, the nano-structure of cellulose and its influence on various properties of the polymer is discussed. In particular, the ability of nano-scale crystallites to undergo lateral co-crystallization and aggregation, as well as to undergo phase transformation through dissolution, alkalization, and chemical modification of cellulose has been the subject of investigation. The recent investigations pave the way for development of highly reactive cellulosic materials. Methods for preparation nanofibrillated cellulose and free nano-particles are described. Some application areas of the nanostructured and nano-cellulose are discussed.

The Application of CNT-Aluminum Nanocomposite in Mechanical Alloying: A Short Review

The ball milling of powders is a non-equilibrium technique (similar to rapid solidification processes) that can be used for production and structural modification of materials. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are relatively new materials with excellent combination of properties. They are one of the advanced reinforcement materials for engineering composites. Besides the polymer and ceramic matrices, in...

A Review on Grafting of Biofibers for Biocomposites

A recent increase in the use of biofibers as low-cost and renewable reinforcement for the polymer biocomposites has been seen globally. Biofibers are classified into: lignocellulosic fibers (i.e., cellulose, wood and natural fibers), nanocellulose (i.e., cellulose nanocrystals and cellulose nanofibrils), and bacterial cellulose, while polymer matrix materials can be petroleum based or bio-based...
